DAY NINE: Charleston, S.C.

OCT. 18, 2018 | Tasty seafood filled the menu at two local restaurants where the crew talked over lunch with a respected local pastor about race and religion, followed by several interviews as the sun set over the Carolina marsh.

At the Marina Variety Store restaurant on the Ashley River in Charleston, the Rev. Joseph Darby, a presiding elder with the African Methodist Episcopal church, discussed the impact of the shootings that killed nine worshipers at Emanuel AME Church in 2015. He also touched on how President Trump has affected political discourse throughout the country.

Later at dinner at the James Beard Award-winning Bowens Island Restaurant near Folly Beach, owner Robert Barber described the eatery’s 72-year history and talked a little politics. He was followed by Sue and Jim Rex, South Carolina’s former state superintendent of education, who outlined how third parties could start making a difference in American politics. Then the crew met a group of five younger voters who are engaged in current affairs and disturbed at the direction of the country.
