A Hard Road: Travels in Trump’s America is a political travelogue that seeks to give context on the American midterm elections in 2018 and the they impact they will have in 2020. The feature-length documentary for non-U.S. audiences will focus on people, issues and culture that are expected to impact the results in the 2018 fight to control the U.S. House and Senate.
At the core of the film for the Australian and American documentary team is the answer to this question: “What matters to you?” The team will travel to different parts of the country , including Arizona, South Carolina, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, to showcase fissures in the American electorate as voters decide whether to endorse the fractious policies of President Donald Trump by re-electing a Republican Congress or to turn to Democrats for new leadership.
The team will spend about a week in each state prior to the Nov. 6 elections to explore key issues – immigration, trade, jobs, guns, Congress, the media, social issues and more – through interviews with political insiders, journalists and academics. The team will also talk with everyday people in popular gathering spots, such as diners, bars, rallies and even at a cattle auction. These interviews will be set against iconic imagery of each state to give viewers a visual taste of parts of American they may not have encountered.
